Cars killing community

A UK study has found – or perhaps, confirmed – that cars kill local communities (as well as, literally, killing a large number of people every year). People living on streets with high volumes of traffic are less likely to consider their neighbours as friends, had less of a sense of pride in their street, and had more mental and physical health problems than people living on streets with little traffic.

Mad Max comes to west Sydney

An interesting piece in today’s Daily Telegraph quotes Curtin University Professor Peter Newman, speaking at a conference examining western Sydney’s future. Prof Newman warns that with oil prices rising, areas of Sydney’s car-dependent west could turn into isolated crime-ridden wastelands, while those who can afford it will continue to move back to inner-city “eco-claves” in the eastern suburbs and inner west, close to jobs and public transport.

“There will be wealthy eco-claves surrounded by Mad Max suburbs,” Prof Newman said, adding that an improved rail network is the only thing that can save western Sydney.
