An interesting piece in today’s Daily Telegraph quotes Curtin University Professor Peter Newman, speaking at a conference examining western Sydney’s future. Prof Newman warns that with oil prices rising, areas of Sydney’s car-dependent west could turn into isolated crime-ridden wastelands, while those who can afford it will continue to move back to inner-city “eco-claves” in the eastern suburbs and inner west, close to jobs and public transport.
“There will be wealthy eco-claves surrounded by Mad Max suburbs,” Prof Newman said, adding that an improved rail network is the only thing that can save western Sydney.
