2020 lack of vision?

Reading about Kevin Rudd’s 2020 Summit, the words “deckchair” and “Titanic” spring to my mind. Why exactly do we need a summit to look for big ideas? Isn’t the challenge of climate change going to be sufficient to keep the Rudd government busy? The greatest challenge the human race has ever faced, and all that. Of course there are other important issues, but the fact environmental concerns seem to have no special priority in the 2020 talkfest is a worrying sign that Rudd and his team really don’t fully understand what climate change means for our future. If they did, the summit would be all about how we can transform society on the organising principle of sustainability -surely enough to occupy the minds of good and great for a weekend.
