Global warming – not quite all over

SMH columnist Michael Duffy recently highlighted the fact that global temperatures have not risen during the last decade, after steep rises in the decade or so before. Duffy concluded from this that there was not enough evidence that global warming was really happening to justify a radical overhaul of the economy and the way we live.

But a recent German study suggests a weakening of the north Atlantic Gulf Stream, a major ocean current that brings warm water from the Carribean to western Europe, is having a cooling effect on global temperatures, that is masking the continuing underlying temperature rise.

The team from the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel, Germany said global warming may enter into a “lull” period until 2015.

That doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
