Polluters get windfall from emissions scheme

This article from the Guardian hightlights one of the dangers with an emissions trading scheme. Business interests pour hugh sums of money into a relentless lobbying campaign and end up with a scheme that is ridiculously slanted towards their interests. In this case, a huge overallocation of free carbon emissions permits in the EU scheme, which polluting firms are now able to sell for massive windfall profits.

The same process is currently taking place here in Australia.

Hi – this criticism of the EU ETS is not quite fair. While some companies have received more credits than they need, the scheme overall will require a reduction in emissions. For an environmentalist, this is the important thing – not the distribution of credits among participants.
